Hong Kong Auto Service Roots
Working nights, he put himself through Lincoln Technical School and earned a degree in Automotive Technology. After graduation, he went to work at the Amoco station at Shermer & Willow Roads in Northbrook and became an ASE-Certified Master Automotive Technician.
Ben came to the United States 24 years ago from Hong Kong, where he was a police constable for the city. Once in the U.S., he began working as a busboy at Loyola Academy High School.
By working 7 days a week, 14-18 hours per day, he also built a loyal following. In 1995, he struck a deal with the owner to purchase the service center, gas station and convenience store.
In 2005, BP/Amoco approached Ben and asked if he would be interested in taking over another site. He considered the proposal and agreed to relocate his facility to its current location at Lake Street and Laramie, just off the Edens. (Coincidentally, it’s also next door to Loyola Academy.)
At the time, the three-bay facility was rundown and in need of a lot of TLC. Ben brought in an architect and contractors for a complete overhaul, which took nearly a year. The renovated auto repair shop opened in November 2006.
Four years later, Ben undertook another growth initiative and added three more service bays, including two 1-ton truck bays. Now double its original size, Hong Kong Auto Service is a thriving example of the success that can come from pursuing a dream through hard work, long hours and, most importantly, quality customer care.
